Artis Zoo

Artis is not just any zoo, it is the oldest in the Netherlands and among the top five oldest zoos worldwide. Back in 1838, this special place was founded as a garden of the Royal Zoological Society Natura Artis Magistra. The main purpose of Artis then and still is to encourage love and care for nature.

Stroll through the park and be enchanted by the unique combination of animals and architectural buildings that create an imposing atmosphere. Here you will find about 750 animal species that feel at home in their native environment. Among them is a large group of algae cells that are almost extinct in the wild. And don't forget to admire the white-tailed gnus, a species that is almost impossible to find in their natural habitat.

What makes Artis even more special is that it has also been officially recognised as a botanical garden since June 2020. Besides the large number of animals you can meet here, you will be amazed by the abundance of plants, flowers and trees that surround you. It is a true paradise for nature lovers and adventurers.
