Cafe de Dokter

In Rozenboomsteeg, a narrow side street off Kalverstraat, you’ll find Café De Dokter – affectionately called “Het Doktertje.” At just eighteen square meters, it’s the smallest pub in Amsterdam. It was founded in 1798 by a surgeon from the nearby Binnengasthuis and originally served as a meeting place for doctors and medical students.

The interior has hardly changed since the nineteenth century. Old medical tools, faded lamps, and jazz music on vinyl create a warm, almost timeless atmosphere. Despite the antique decor, everything is spotless and well cared for.

Het Doktertje is still a family-run business. The current owners, the seventh generation, welcome regulars and new visitors as if they were at home. There’s no loud music here; just soft jazz and the gentle murmur of conversation.

You can taste the house jenever “Dokters Recept” and immerse yourself in the stories of generations of visitors.
