Cafe Hoppe

On the Spui, we discover a special place, namely Café Hoppe, one of the oldest traditional cafés in Amsterdam. Since 1670, this café has been welcoming guests and to this day it is a lively meeting place. However, the building has an interesting history, because before it served as a café, it was a distillery with its own tasting room. Here, all liquor was distilled artisanally. When you take a step inside, you imagine yourself in the past. The authentic interior from that time has been carefully preserved and is managed by Monumentenzorg Amsterdam. 

Behind the bar, you can even admire the old gin barrels from which spirits were poured back then. There are whispers that the sand on the floor still dates back to the 17th century. What makes Café Hoppe extra unique is the fact that no music is still played there. A conscious choice to preserve the authentic atmosphere and provide space for conversations and socialising. The café has even gained international recognition, as in 2012 the renowned American magazine 'The Newsweek' placed Café Hoppe in the top 10 best cafés in the world.
