Central Station

Amsterdam Central Station, an architectural masterpiece that acts as the gateway to the city, was built between 1881 and 1889. This station attracts some 160,000 passengers daily, making it the second busiest station in the Netherlands after Utrecht Central Station. Whether you arrive by train from another city or from Schiphol Airport, this imposing building is often the first thing you see when entering Amsterdam.

Step out about 100 metres and look around to catch a glimpse of the beautiful surroundings that await you in this vibrant city. You will be greeted by the water, graceful canal boats, the majestic Saint Nicholas Basilica and trams whizzing merrily by. This is the perfect start to an adventure in Amsterdam!

Did you know that Amsterdam Central Station was designed by famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, who was also responsible for designing the iconic Rijksmuseum? The station opened its doors in 1889 and has since become an important historical monument, maintaining its character and appearance over the years.

One of the station's most striking features is the impressive canopy over the platforms. This steel frame with glass panels was built in the 1980s, after the original canopy was badly damaged during World War II.

Besides the train station, Amsterdam Central Station also has an underground level, the Amsterdam Central Metro Station, where the city's various metro lines converge. The station also acts as an important hub for city transport, with a seamless connection to the bus station at the front of the building.
