Felyx Meritis

"Felix Meritis" is Latin for "Happiness through Merit". In 1777, a society with this name was founded by affluent citizens in Amsterdam who were inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment. The aim of this association was to support art and science. To this end, it was decided to design and build a building that could serve as a meeting place for gatherings on various topics such as science, literature, painting and commerce.

The building was designed by architect Jacob Otten Husly and construction was completed in 1788. Besides its meeting function, the building also housed a library, a drawing academy and a physics society. It soon became an important cultural centre in the late 18th and 19th centuries, where intellectuals and artists met to exchange knowledge and discuss ideas.

The oval concert hall in the building became known worldwide and welcomed famous composers such as Schumann and Brahms, who performed their works here. 

Today, the building serves as the European Centre for Arts and Sciences. It acts as a vibrant cultural and scientific hub, hosting various events, exhibitions and activities. Visitors are invited to participate and enjoy the rich history and contemporary dynamism of this historic building.
