Groot Melkhuis

Welcome to the Groot Melkhuis, the Big Milkhouse, one of the most charming spots in Vondelpark, and a place with a surprisingly milky past. Back in 1874, this wasn't a café at all. It was a proper farm, run by a tenant farmer named J. Barreveld. His job was straightforward: keep cows, collect milk, and sell it to park visitors who wanted a fresh glass after their afternoon stroll. Some people drank it right here on the spot, others took a bottle home for later. 

Simple pleasures, honestly. Those cows grazed peacefully on the meadows that now make up the Festina tennis courts, just nearby. The rent that Barreveld paid for the Groot Melkhuis went straight to the Vondelpark board, which used the money to help maintain the park. So in a way, every glass of milk sold here helped keep this green place looking beautiful. Fast forward to today, and the farm has transformed into a lovely chalet café with a full menu and a playground for the kids.
