House De Pinto

Welcome to Huis de Pinto, a unique property with a rich history and an eventful past. The former home of Jan Jansz Carel, one of the first leaders of the VOC, was later named after the wealthy Portuguese-Jewish family, Pinto. But this historic building had almost no future. In 1968, the municipality bought the property to demolish it for the construction of a motorway. Fortunately, things went differently than planned. The building was later squatted and served as a base for the fight against demolition. In the attached image, you can see how Huis de Pinto is the only one remaining on St Antoniebreestraat.
