Jan and Miep Gies

We are standing here at Hunzestraat 25, the house where Jan and Miep Gies lived during the Second World War. From this home, they helped Otto Frank, his family, and the other people in hiding in the Secret Annex. Miep worked as Otto Frank’s secretary and provided food, books, and news from the outside world. Her husband Jan was active in the resistance, helping with ration cards and safe addresses.

After the arrest of the people in hiding, Miep found Anne Frank’s notebooks at the Prinsengracht and kept them safe until Otto Frank returned after the war. Through their courage and care, the diary still exists today — a lasting reminder of humanity in inhuman times.
