Jewish Resistance Monument

Welcome to the Jewish Resistance Memorial, found on the corner of the Amstel River next to the Stopera. This imposing black monument was erected in honour of the brave Jewish resistance fighters who rebelled against the German occupiers during World War II. The Jewish Resistance Committee diligently initiated and erected this memorial, wishing that the struggles and sacrifices of these brave resistance fighters will never be forgotten. The text on the memorial reads, "If my eyes were sources of tears, I would weep day and night for the fallen warriors of my beloved people." This poignant monument, which has adorned the site since 1988, was designed by sculptor Josef Glatt. The Jewish resistance formed an essential part of the resistance in the Netherlands during World War II. Various groups and individuals courageously resisted the German occupiers. They gathered intelligence, sabotaged the occupying forces and helped people in hiding and Jews fleeing the Nazis. The resistance played a crucial role in the fight against the Germans, as it weakened the occupying forces and gave the Dutch population hope for liberation.
