Johnny Jordaan

Look around you. This square in the Jordaan neighbourhood is more than just a pleasant spot to pause. It's the home ground of Johnny Jordaan, the man whose voice became the sound of Amsterdam itself.

Born here in 1924, Johnny grew up in these narrow streets, surrounded by canal houses and the everyday life of working-class Amsterdam. He started singing in local cafes in the 1940s, charming anyone who'd listen. His big breakthrough came in the 1950s with his debut album "De Zingende Zwerver," and from that moment on, there was no stopping him.

His song "Geef Mij Maar Amsterdam" became the unofficial anthem of this city. He even sings the words: "Geef mij maar Amsterdam, dat's mooier dan Parijs," which means: give me Amsterdam, it's more beautiful than Paris. Johnny performed at the famous Carré theatre, appeared on television, and built a connection with his audience that very few artists manage to create. He passed away in 1989, but the statue standing near you makes sure nobody forgets him.
