Karpershoek

Amsterdam has countless pub legends, but Café Karpershoek on Martelaarsgracht has proudly called itself the oldest pub in the city for years. Officially, according to historical research, it isn’t the oldest, but the story of this place is just as special.

Since 1606, beer has been served here without interruption. The building itself was constructed in 1557 and once served as lodging for VOC sailors. The floor is still covered with silver sand, an old tradition that made cleaning easier and gave the space its own unique character. Sailors, merchants, and travelers gathered here to eat, drink, and exchange stories.

Inside, there’s a calm, almost intimate atmosphere. No loud music, just the soft murmur of voices and the clinking of glasses. Wooden beams, old photos, and seventeenth-century details make you forget you’re in the busy heart of Amsterdam.
