Keizersgracht

Along the majestic Keizersgracht, one of Amsterdam's three main canals, you can enjoy enchanting views of historic buildings and the authentic atmosphere this canal exudes. The canal owes its name to Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire. Together with Herengracht and Prinsengracht, construction of Keizersgracht began in 1615, as part of Amsterdam's ambitious urban expansion.

Although originally planned as a wide boulevard without water, the city council suspected that the future residents would prefer a canal in front of their door anyway, so they could reach their houses by boat. The canal is 31 metres wide and surrounded by the characteristic canal houses from the Golden Age. When the construction was completed, it quickly became one of Amsterdam's most prestigious spots. It was see and be seen!

In the winter months, the Keizersgracht canal can transform into a lively ice rink, where Amsterdammers put on their skates and enjoy the enchanting beauty of the frozen canal. The ice is closely monitored until it is thick enough, after which the popular Keizersrace is held, a sprint race on the canal's natural ice.

Part of the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Keizersgracht is one of Amsterdam's most popular tourist attractions. It offers visitors not only panoramic views of the beautiful historical buildings, but also a unique insight into the city's rich past.
