Maria Heineken Square

To the side of the impressive brewery of the largest Dutch beer brand stretches Maria Heinekenplein. Within the Pijp, as you may have noticed, numerous streets are named after famous painters. Names like Frans Hals, Ferdinand Bol and Gerard Dou are among those of renowned Dutch art painters. When the Heineken family conceived the plan to name the square behind the brewery after a male relative, it ran into an obstacle.

For it turned out that the streets in the Pijp were already named after art painters, which the brewers were not. In the end, a balanced decision was made, and the square was named after a painter from the family: Marie Heineken. Today, the square is intertwined with various food and beverage outlets. It forms the starting point of the lively character of the Pijp and is crowded in the evening. A visit to Maria Heinekenplein is therefore definitely worthwhile!
