Montelbaan Tower

We are at Oudeschans, where the Montelbaan tower was erected in the year 1516 as a strategic lookout post. During this period, the Zuiderzee, a large inland sea in the Netherlands connected to the North Sea, played a crucial role in Amsterdam's prosperity. In the 16th century, Amsterdam grew into a thriving trade centre, through which ships sailed the Zuiderzee to trade and prosper. 

The Montelbaanstoren, originally intended as a lookout post, proved invaluable to Amsterdam's security and economic success. It symbolised the city's growing power and influence. This tower, subject to many modifications over the years, also featured prominently in the works of the famous painter Rembrandt, who captured the tower before it acquired its distinctive white appearance.

 In the 17th century, the Montelbaan tower was given a new function, adding an elegant white upper section and serving as housing for an enchanting chimes. Several centuries later, the municipality offered the tower for rent to private individuals. It was assumed that this unique location with its artistic value would be eagerly sought after. However, to the surprise of many, no one turned out to be interested in occupying this special tower. This was partly due to the considerable monthly rent of 9,000 euros.
