Olympic Stadium

The Olympic Stadium, designed by Jan Wils for the 1928 Summer Olympics, is of historical importance as the host venue of these games. With a capacity of more than 22,000 spectators, it was an impressive venue. Although it no longer serves as a competition venue, a local athletics club remains active there. Not only was the stadium the home of the Summer Olympics, but it also replaced Stadion de Meer (the predecessor of the Johan Cruijff Arena) as the venue for crucial Ajax matches, especially against rivals such as Feyenoord and PSV, as well as foreign clubs. The Olympic Stadium honours the triumphs of Dutch athletes with various commemorations, including the Wall of Fame with the names of Dutch Olympic champions. This list grows after each Summer or Winter Olympic Games. Today, the stadium has a prominent role in large-scale events, such as festivals, and serves as the finish line for the Amsterdam Marathon.
