Portuguese Synagogue

You are standing in front of the Portuguese-Israelite Synagogue, also known as the Snoge! This beautiful building is located in the heart of Amsterdam's historic Jewish quarter. It is part of a vast synagogue complex and is the only synagogue in Amsterdam still in active use. 

Did you know that when this synagogue was built in the 17th century, it was the largest synagogue in the world at the time? Inside the Snoge, you will be amazed by its beautiful Sephardic-style architecture. The building was built between 1671 and 1675. But what makes this place really special is that both the exterior and interior are still in excellent condition. 

Unfortunately, during the war, many synagogues were completely destroyed, inside and out. That is why this building is such an important reminder of Amsterdam's rich Jewish history. In the 17th century, a large number of Jewish refugees, mainly from Portugal and Spain, sought refuge in Amsterdam. At the time, the city offered one of the few safe places in Europe where Jews could live and work without the chance of being arrested. Amsterdam became a welcoming haven for Jews persecuted elsewhere in Europe because of their faith. 

The Jewish community grew rapidly and had a significant impact on both the cultural and economic life of the city. They brought with them new trade contacts, ideas and techniques, contributing significantly to the formation of Amsterdam as a trading centre and as a city of tolerance and diversity. The Jewish quarter became an important part of Amsterdam, with numerous synagogues and other Jewish institutions. The Portuguese-Israelite Synagogue, affectionately called Snoge, served as a centre of Jewish religious and cultural activities and remains an important landmark in Amsterdam to this day.
