After the war, in late September 1945, Otto Frank began copying excerpts from Anne’s diary so that friends and relatives could read translated passages. He felt that the original text contained much that was too personal to share openly. Gradually, however, he realised that the diary carried a message meant for more than just the family. By November 1945 he decided to publish his daughter’s words. Friends had convinced him that he could not keep this document to himself — that Anne’s voice had to be heard. Yet finding a publisher proved difficult. Now, eighty years later, it stands as one of the most important war-time books ever published — a work of immeasurable value.
