Rembrandt Square

Welcome to the famous Rembrandtplein, one of Amsterdam's most legendary squares. This square bears the name of the world-famous Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijn. Known in earlier times as Reguliersplein, it was later renamed Botermarkt because of the weekly dairy market that took place here on every Monday morning since 1669. A special feature of this market was the so-called 'chicken corner', where poultry was sold that was not allowed to be delivered directly to homes.

A striking feature of the square is the imposing cast-iron statue of Rembrandt, a masterpiece crafted by sculptor Louis Royer in 1852. Due to changes in the square, the statue has changed position several times.

Today, Rembrandtplein is a vibrant place full of atmospheric restaurants, cosy cafés and lively nightlife. It is also home to one of Amsterdam's most popular clubs, called 'the Escape', where the night comes alive.
