Rijksmuseum gardens

The gardens surrounding the Rijksmuseum are an enchanting addition to the museum experience and are sometimes unfairly overlooked. These gardens form a beautiful sculpture garden surrounding the museum and are divided into two sections. The original design of the gardens is historic , having been designed by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, the same visionary responsible for the iconic design of the Rijksmuseum itself.

The gardens are freely accessible to the public and offer an oasis of greenery and tranquillity in the heart of the city. A fence marks the boundary of the gardens, which are a place of relaxation and contemplation. However, these green spaces do not just act as resting points; they are also used for various exhibitions and cultural events, making them a lively cultural centre.

What makes the gardens even more special is the renowned Michelin-starred restaurant RIJKS®, located on the left side of Museumstraat, seen from the majestic Museumplein. This high-end restaurant offers guests the opportunity to dine in the shadow of the Rijksmuseum and experience culinary delights prepared by chef Joris Bijdendijk. With his impressive background and acquiring multiple Michelin stars, Bijdendijk is known as one of the most influential culinary masters in Amsterdam and far beyond.

Amid the lush flora and scrumptious culinary experiences, there are also works of art to be admired in the gardens. One of these artworks is a statue on the museum façade, by none other than Pierre Cuypers himself, whose creativity brought both the Rijksmuseum and the surrounding gardens to life.
