Rijksmuseum & Heineken

--:--

We are standing at the Rijksmuseum, opened in 1885 and designed by Pierre Cuypers. The museum was built when Amsterdam sought to regain its cultural prominence after a long economic lull. Gerard Adriaan Heineken – brewer, entrepreneur, and city councillor from 1871 to 1877 – played an active role in this civic renewal.

He was considered one of the driving forces behind the so-called Amsterdam Renaissance, a movement linking commerce, culture, and progress. Heineken helped build public support and attract investment for major city projects, including the Rijksmuseum. His belief that economic and cultural growth go hand in hand still resonates today: Heineken remains an official partner of the Rijksmuseum, supporting exhibitions and educational initiatives.
