Sinterklaas

Sinterklaas in Amsterdam is a family celebration that shapes the weeks leading up to 5 December. Around mid-November, Saint Nicholas officially arrives by steamboat, usually via the IJ, followed by a festive parade through the historic city centre. Thousands of children line the canals and streets, wearing paper mitres or hats, hoping to catch pepernoten and sweets.

In the weeks after the arrival, children “set their shoe” in the evening near a radiator or window, often with a drawing and a carrot for Sinterklaas’ horse. By morning, they usually find a small gift, some candy, or a mandarin. Schools, community centres and sports clubs organise Sinterklaas parties with songs, games and sometimes a visit from Sinterklaas himself.

The highlight is Pakjesavond on 5 December, when families exchange presents, often wrapped with playful poems that tease and praise. Bakeries and shops are filled with chocolate letters, speculaas and marzipan, giving the whole city a distinctly Sinterklaas flavour.
