In the year 1854, the imposing church of 'Our Lady the Mother of God' rose up as a sign of liberation after the ban on building Catholic churches was lifted. This masterpiece of architecture was designed in the enchanting neo-Gothic style by none other than Theo Molkenboer, a prominent architect known for his magnificent Catholic creations.

Originally intended as a spiritual refuge for Amsterdam's Roman Catholic congregation, the church underwent a twist in its story after the dark days of World War II. The number of believers steadily dwindled, and so it was that the church eventually opened its doors to the Syrian Orthodox community. Today, this holy place welcomes with open arms several Catholic communities, including the Surinamese Catholic community.

Enter the interior of the church and be overwhelmed by the beautiful decorations. Statues and paintings adorn the space, bringing to life its rich spiritual history. A visit to this place is definitely worthwhile, an experience you don't want to miss.
