Noteworthy is the presence of dozens of surgeons and pharmacists, who settled on these islands and contributed significantly to the medical care and welfare of the community.

Kattenburg, one of the pearls of the Eastern Islands, was home to the Admiralty of Amsterdam. This is where the imposing Amsterdam Marine Etablissement arose, a reminder of the city's glorious maritime history.
