The Gate Tower

What many people do not know is that there used to be a prison here. In the 19th century, the Jan Rooden Gate Tower was located here, and the tower housed a prison. If you look closely at the photo we have attached, you can still see the tower. Since 2003, the contours of the tower have been visible in the pavement. From the side of the bridge, you can still see the old prison, with a large wooden door and windows with bars. These were the places you preferred not to go in those days. The prisoners were mostly pirates who refused to pay taxes. The prison was also a deterrent for visitors to the city. If you entered the city, you had to pass the Torensluis where you immediately became aware that you had to behave properly in Amsterdam. Fortunately, conditions today are better than in those days.
