The Hermitage / H'ART

Amsterdam's Hermitage Museum, an annex of the renowned State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, finds its home in the historic Amstelhof building. This cultural institution offers a diverse range of exhibitions, ranging from art and history to cultural artefacts that span the globe. 

The museum is highly regarded for its rich collection of Dutch and Flemish art, alongside temporary presentations of works by international artists. Its educational programmes and various events make Hermitage Amsterdam a popular destination for visitors of all ages. A unique feature of this museum was its continuous offering of exhibitions from the vast collection of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, which, with over three million objects, is among the largest museums in the world. 

However, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the management and supervisory board decided to respect international sanctions against Russia during the Russian-Ukrainian war. This led to the severing of ties with the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Recent developments show that the museum is moving in a new direction. In late June 2023, it was announced that the museum would bear the name H'ART Museum from 1 September that year. This renewal was accompanied by the establishment of partnerships with three other renowned foreign museums: the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the British Museum in London and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.
