The Klassieker

The Klassieker between Ajax and Feyenoord is more than a football match; it’s a clash of identities. The rivalry began in the 1920s, when both clubs became symbols of their respective cities. Ajax from liberal Amsterdam, Feyenoord from the working-class heart of Rotterdam. This cultural contrast laid the foundation for a deeply rooted “us versus them” mentality.

Since their first meeting on October 9, 1921, which ended in a 2-2 draw, the Klassieker has grown into the explosive peak of the Dutch football season. As the clubs grew more successful, the rivalry intensified.

At times, it turned violent. On March 23, 1997, a planned clash between hooligans from both clubs erupted near the A9 motorway in Beverwijk. What began as an organized confrontation spiraled into brutal chaos. Ajax supporter Carlo Picornie, aged 35, was surrounded and fatally struck with a hammer. He died on the spot. His death shocked the country and caused widespread outrage.

Other incidents — like the ice ball that hit Wim Jansen in 1980, the nail bombs in 1989, or the fireworks incident in 2023 — show just how tense these matches can be. In April 2024, Ajax suffered its worst defeat ever: 6-0 at De Kuip.

The Klassieker is not only a sporting clash, but also a reflection of deeper social tensions. Despite all measures, it remains the most charged fixture in the Netherlands.
