The Plantage

The Plantage is a neighbourhood in Amsterdam, located just east of the bustling city centre. During city expansion in 1663, this neighbourhood was also known as "Plantaadje". The name "De Plantage" comes from a historical context where this neighbourhood was part of the fourth expansion of Amsterdam. In this expansion, not enough plots were sold, which led to an interruption of building activities. As a result, temporary gardens were created, which could be rented by Amsterdam residents for a certain period, in anticipation of future building plans.

Today, De Plantage is a residential area with picturesque tree-lined streets, serene parks and tranquil canals. Within this enchanting setting are some of Amsterdam's most notable cultural treasures, such as the venerable Artis Royal Zoo, the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, a historic botanical garden, and the Amsterdam Museum, which highlights the city's rich history. The Plantage has established itself as an oasis of tranquillity and inspiration, where locals and travellers alike love to get carried away.
