The Rijksmuseum

Known worldwide as one of the most esteemed museums, the Rijksmuseum has regularly featured prominently in the pecking order of the 'Best, Most Beautiful or Most Special Museums in the World'.

The museum, which opened its doors in 1885, was designed by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers and stands as a symbol of Dutch art and history. While the building has been renovated and maintained over the years, it remains an architectural masterpiece that is well worth a visit.

Within the walls of the Rijksmuseum is a treasure trove of artworks, ranging from masterpieces of the Golden Age, such as "The Night Watch" by Rembrandt, to other forms of craftsmanship, such as furniture, ceramics and clothing. The gallery of honour is home to some of the world's most iconic works of art, including masterpieces by great artists such as Johannes Vermeer and Vincent van Gogh.

Looking back to the early 19th century, the origins of the museum unfold. In 1808, Louis Napoleon led the Kingdom of Holland. He chose to move the Dutch art and history collections to Amsterdam, the new capital. This valuable collection found shelter in the Paleis op de Dam, once Amsterdam's town hall. Here, the collections were joined by the city's main paintings, including Rembrandt's famous work "The Night Watch". The Royal Museum opened its doors on the upper floor of the palace in 1809 and acted as a precursor to the later Rijksmuseum.

During the turbulent period of World War II, the precious works of art were scattered across the country to protect them from the threat of German occupation. In 1942, some of the most valuable pieces were secured in a special vault in the underground caves near Maastricht. After the war, a significant part of the collection remained safely stored at safe houses in the Netherlands.
