The Sail

"Sail Amsterdam", an event that takes place every five years, transforms the port of Amsterdam into a spectacle with majestic sailing ships from all corners of the world. The first edition, organised to celebrate Amsterdam's anniversary, attracted hundreds of ships. 

Due to its overwhelming success, they decided to organise this maritime festival on a regular basis. With each new edition, the number of ships and visitors grew steadily. From the first event with 850 ships to more recent gatherings where thousands of ships participated and millions of people visited the festivities. Such was the popularity of the event that they had to limit the number of visitors allowed access to the ships to ensure safety. 

Highlights over the years included the participation of the STS Sedov, one of the largest sailing ships in the world. In addition, smaller events, such as boat parades and yacht building, added to the festivities. Despite an interruption by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the event cancelled in 2020, "Sail Amsterdam" remains a highlight of the city's cultural calendar. The upcoming anniversary in 2025, coinciding with 750 years of Amsterdam and 50 years since the first "Sail Amsterdam" event, promises to be a memorable celebration of the city's rich maritime heritage.
