The Stedelijk Museum

An institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art, the Stedelijk Museum houses a diverse collection that includes not only paintings but also other art forms. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, it welcomed between 600,000 and 700,000 visitors annually. The exhibitions have always played a public role, striving to provide knowledge transfer in addition to visual enjoyment. The collection includes artworks by influential figures such as Mondrian, Picasso and Andy Warhol, all of whom were crucial to the development of modern art as we know it. In 1895, the Stedelijk Museum opened its doors on Paulus Potterstraat, next to the Rijksmuseum. The building was later thoroughly renovated and given a new entrance on Museumplein. The modern building, often called "the bathtub" because of its distinctive shape, harmonises beautifully with both the old architecture and the modern look of the museum. Upon contemplating the building, it immediately becomes clear that it is home to modern art.
