The story of the Bijlmer

The Amsterdam Bijlmer is a neighbourhood in the southeast of Amsterdam. Developed in the 1960s and 1970s as a modern residential area, the area was designed to accommodate the city's growing population. The Bijlmer consists of several large residential blocks, built in modernist style and known for their distinctive geometric shapes. The Bijlmer was originally intended to be an independent and self-sufficient community, with schools, shops and other amenities nearby. However, the area faced several challenges, including high levels of crime and social problems. In 1992, a plane crashed into one of the apartment buildings in the Bijlmer, killing 43 people and causing extensive damage. The Amsterdam Bijlmer has undergone a major redevelopment and revitalisation in recent years. Many of the older flat blocks have been renovated and modernised, and the area now offers a range of new shops, restaurants and other amenities. The Bijlmer also has a diverse population, with residents from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
