Grand Place

Antwerp’s Grand Place lies at the heart of the old city quarter. Around the square stand impressive buildings reminiscent of Antwerp in the 16th century, including the Renaissance-style Town Hall. Yet the area is not purely historical; within walking distance, you’ll also find modern shops, cafés, and restaurants.

At the center of the square stands a bronze statue on a rocky fountain, about 10 meters high. It was designed by sculptor Jef Lambeaux and depicts the legendary hero Silvius Brabo. According to the myth, Brabo encountered the giant Antigoon while crossing the river Scheldt. The giant demanded toll from all travelers, cutting off the hands of those who refused. Brabo defeated the giant, severed his hand, and threw it into the river. This tale is said to explain the origin of Antwerp’s name, from the Dutch words “hand” and “werpen,” meaning “to throw.”

Beyond its historical charm, the Grand Place is also a lively meeting spot. Every year, a festive Christmas Market is held here, drawing thousands of visitors from both the city and beyond.
