Het Steen

Het Steen is one of those buildings that refuses to be just one thing. Standing on the banks of the Scheldt, this medieval fortress began its life as a defensive wall against Viking raids, its thick stone walls meant to stop longships from pushing further into the city. For a long time, it was simply known as Antwerpen Burcht, the castle of Antwerp.

The building took on its current shape during the reign of Emperor Charles V, who expanded and reinforced it as a statement of imperial power. Inside those same walls, soldiers kept watch, but prisoners also paced their days away, staring at stone. Fortress and prison, side by side.

Over the centuries, Het Steen quietly shifted roles. It became a warehouse, then fell into a kind of dignified silence, before eventually reopening as a museum dedicated to Antwerp's maritime history. Step outside and you can still see historic ships moored along the quay, their hulls a reminder that this city once moved half of Europe's trade.
