Anyone walking through Antwerp can’t miss Meir. This wide shopping street connects the historic center with Central Station and is now the most famous place to shop in Belgium. Yet Meir started out very simply, as a street where wood was once stored.

The big change came in 1993, when the street was closed to traffic and turned into an elegant promenade. Today you’ll find everything from international fashion chains to luxury boutiques, surrounded by historic buildings that reflect the city’s rich heritage.

But Meir is not just about shopping. Along the way, you’ll discover cultural and historic landmarks such as the Osterrieth House, the former Royal Residence, and the beautiful Stadsfeestzaal Shopping Center, once a grand hall and now a luxurious shopping venue.

A striking detail is the giant hand sculpture by Henri de Miller, a playful nod to the legend of Antwerp. It’s a popular spot for photos, and children love to play around it.
