MUHKA

MUHKA began as an ambitious vision: a museum for contemporary art in Flanders, established with support from the Flemish Community. Its roots lie in Antwerp’s International Cultural Centre (ICC), where experimental art had flourished since the 1970s. In 1987, that ambition took physical shape in a former grain silo on Leuvenstraat, close to the Scheldt River.

The museum became a lively platform for visual art, performance, film, and dialogue. Under the leadership of Flor Bex, and later Bart De Baere, MUHKA built a remarkable collection of thousands of works, from Belgian pioneers to global voices. Today, its holdings include artists like Panamarenko, Otobong Nkanga, and Jimmie Durham.

Beyond exhibitions, MUHKA offers films, artist talks, and educational programs. Its library and café make it a place where art and city life meet.
