Pieter Appelmans Monument

Standing at the foot of the Cathedral of Our Lady, the Pieter Appelmans Monument does something quietly remarkable. It refuses to let you forget that a building this extraordinary was never built by one man alone.

The bronze sculpture was created in 1935 by artist Jef Lambeaux, and it shows architect Pieter Appelmans surrounded by 3 other figures — a stonemason, a carpenter, a bricklayer. These are not famous men. They have no names on any plaque. One of them points upward toward the cathedral rising above you right now, as if to say: we made that. Another carries a ladder, and a third shapes stone with steady hands.

Appelmans was the visionary, no question. But what Lambeaux understood when he made this monument is that a vision without skilled hands behind it stays a vision forever. These anonymous workers spent years of their lives cutting, hauling, fitting, and balancing stone so that future strangers could stand here and feel small in the best possible way.
