Arc de Triomf

Right here is a triumphal arch that breaks all the rules: instead of celebrating war, it was built to welcome the world in peace. Standing at the northern end of Passeig de Lluís Companys, where a palm lined promenade stretches toward Parc de la Ciutadella, the Arc de Triomf was erected in 1888 as the grand gateway to the Universal Exhibition. This was Spain's first international fair, and architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas created something bold: a 30 meter monument built entirely of red brick in the Neo Mudéjar style, fusing Spanish, Arabic and Asian architectural influences.

The message carved into stone tells everything. The front frieze reads Barcelona rep les nacions, meaning Barcelona welcomes the nations. The rear side shows Recompensa, representing the awards given to exhibition participants from 22 countries. Sculptures along the sides celebrate agriculture, industry, commerce, science and art, the pillars of progress that the fair showcased.

Stone bats on the pillars honour King Jaume I, while coats of arms from 49 Spanish provinces crown the top, with the city's emblem presiding above them all. When the scaffolding came down on inauguration day in May 1888, Vilaseca watched nervously, worried about structural failure. His friend, architect Gaietà Buigas, stood directly underneath to prove his confidence in the design.
