Els Encants

Here is one of Europe's oldest trading grounds where seven centuries of bargain hunting comes alive under a giant golden mirror. Els Encants is a flea market like no other, a place where the past refuses to fade and every object carries a story waiting to be discovered. Nestled beside the striking Torre Glòries tower at Plaça de les Glòries, this market has been the heartbeat of street commerce since around 1300.

What started as vendors spreading their goods on bare ground outside medieval city walls has grown into a massive operation with over 500 traders selling everything from antique furniture to vintage records across 15,000 square meters. The name itself reveals something special. "Encant" means auction in Catalan, and this tradition sets the market apart from any other in Europe.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 7 AM, auctioneers sell batches of goods in a ritual that has survived since medieval times. Dealers arrive before dawn, bidding on estate clearances, factory stock, and forgotten treasures. This ancestral practice exists nowhere else on the continent. The market wandered through different neighborhoods for centuries before settling near Plaça de les Glòries in 1928. In 2013, architect Fermín Vázquez created the current spectacular building with its 25 meter high mirrored roof of aluminum and zinc that reflects the bustling activity below like a living kaleidoscope.
