Mercat de Sant Antoni

Right here stands one of the largest covered markets ever built outside medieval city walls, a cast iron monument where locals have gathered for over 140 years. At the southwestern edge of the Eixample district, where ancient fortifications once protected the city, the Mercat de Sant Antoni marks the spot where street vendors first set up stalls at the old Sant Antoni gate.

Architect Antoni Rovira i Trias designed this Greek cross shaped building with engineer Josep M. Cornet i Mas, opening it in 1882 as the city expanded beyond its walls. The wrought iron and glass structure spans an entire city block, crowned by an octagonal dome that mirrors the crossing pattern of the surrounding streets. It was the first market to serve the new neighborhoods spreading across the plain. Every Sunday since the 1930s, one of Europe's largest outdoor book markets fills the streets around the iron structure.

Collectors gather to trade vintage magazines, stamps, comics, and vinyl records in a ritual passed down through generations. The market closed in 2009 for restoration. Workers uncovered Roman remains buried beneath the floors, revealing layers of history spanning two millennia.
