The World Begins With Every Kiss

A kiss captured in 4,000 moments of freedom covers an entire wall just steps from the towering Gothic Cathedral. What appears from afar as a passionate embrace between two lovers transforms up close into thousands of tiny photographs, each one a personal answer to a single question: What does freedom mean to you?

In Plaça d'Isidre Nonell, nestled in the ancient Gothic Quarter, this 8 meter wide ceramic mosaic has become the most visited mural in the city. Photographer Joan Fontcuberta and ceramicist Toni Cumella created The World Begins With Every Kiss in 2014 to mark 300 years since September 11, 1714, when the city surrendered after a brutal 14 month siege during the War of Spanish Succession. Instead of commemorating loss, they chose to celebrate resilience.

Fontcuberta published a call in newspaper El Periódico asking residents to submit photographs representing freedom. Within days, more than 4,000 people responded. Each image was printed onto weather resistant ceramic tiles, then carefully arranged by color and density to form the larger kiss. The Oliver Wendell Holmes quote beside the mural reads: The sound of a kiss is not so loud as that of a cannon, but its echo lasts a great deal longer. Here, individual moments of joy and liberation merge into a collective testament to the enduring power of freedom and love.
