Tibidabo

Right here is where the devil himself once stood, offering Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. Tibidabo means "I will give you" in Latin, drawn from that biblical temptation atop a towering mountain. Standing at 512 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, this is the highest point in the Serra de Collserola mountain range, crowned with a striking church and vintage amusement park visible from nearly every neighborhood below. In 1899, pharmacist Salvador Andreu i Grau had a vision.

He wanted to transform this isolated peak into a place where ordinary people could escape the crowded streets and breathe mountain air. He founded a company and began building a tramway and funicular railway to reach the summit. On October 29, 1901, Spain's first funicular opened here, carrying excited passengers up the steep slope. It became an instant sensation. The amusement park followed in 1905, making it one of Europe's oldest still operating.

Many original rides survive, including the Avió from 1928, a replica plane suspended by crane that mimics the first commercial flight between Madrid and this coastal city. The Temple of the Sacred Heart took 60 years to build, starting in 1902. Architect Enric Sagnier designed its neo Gothic towers and the bronze Jesus statue that stretches its arms over the landscape below.
