A monument in honor of Konrad Adenauer, Germany's first chancellor, stands on Adenauerplatz in Berlin. The Konrad-Adenauer-Denkmal was designed by artist Helga Tiemann. Helga Tiemann (1917–2008) was known for her portraits of important figures. Many Germans have seen her work without realizing it.

The statue of Adenauer was unveiled in 2005, based on a photo taken on September 21, 1949. In the photo, Adenauer is leaving the headquarters of the Allied High Commission at Hotel Petersberg in Königswinter, one week after being elected chancellor by a slim majority. Theodor Heuss became the first federal president.

Adenauer was re-elected as chancellor three more times and served until 1963. He then remained president of the CDU until 1966. He died in 1967 at the age of 91. In 2003, Adenauer was voted Greatest German of All Time by ZDF viewers.
