Botanical Garden

The Berlin Botanical Garden, founded in 1679 and relocated between 1897 and 1910, is a 43-hectare paradise of history and biodiversity. Initially conceived to cultivate plants from German colonies for academic study, it has grown into one of the world’s leading botanical gardens. Its impressive greenhouses, including the iconic Große Tropenhaus, host an extraordinary variety of plants, from towering bamboo to the rare Wollemia nobilis, a tree once thought extinct until its rediscovery in Australia in 1994.

The design was shaped by the botanist Adolf Engler, who arranged plants geographically. This allows visitors to walk through ecosystems ranging from the African savanna to the Arctic tundra in a single visit. The Tropenhaus, with its iron and glass structure, provides a warm refuge for tropical species even during Berlin’s cold winters. A special initiative is the plant adoption program, where visitors can sponsor individual plants, supporting their care and conservation.

In 2006, the garden underwent major renovations, restoring historic buildings and modernizing facilities to enhance the visitor experience. Complementing the living collection, the Botanical Museum offers exhibitions on plant evolution, ecology, and the cultural significance of plants.
