Eva Braun

Eva Braun, a name less known than that of her infamous partner Adolf Hitler, led a life shrouded in mystery and controversy. Born on February 6, 1912, in Munich, Eva grew up in a middle-class family. Her father was a schoolteacher, and her mother a seamstress. Despite her ordinary beginnings, her life took a dramatic turn when she met Hitler in October 1929, while working as an assistant and model for Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler’s personal photographer. Their relationship was kept largely out of the public eye. Hitler, keen to preserve his image as the celibate Führer, kept Eva in the shadows. Still, her devotion to him never faltered. She endured long periods of loneliness and isolation, as Hitler’s political duties always came first.

Eva attempted suicide twice, in 1932 and 1935, likely driven by the strain of their secretive and tumultuous relationship. Her life was marked by a pursuit of normalcy within the abnormal world of the Third Reich. She enjoyed photography, skiing, and cinema. Her personal films and photographs, discovered after the war, offer a rare glimpse into the private life of Hitler and his inner circle, showing the contrast between the normality she longed for and the horrific political reality around her. In 1936, Eva moved into the Berghof, Hitler’s residence in the Bavarian Alps. Despite her proximity to the epicenter of Nazi power, she remained politically uninvolved, spending her time decorating, hosting social gatherings, and indulging in her hobbies.

Her presence was more about companionship than politics. As the war neared its end and the Third Reich collapsed, Eva’s loyalty remained unshaken. On April 29, 1945, she and Hitler married in a brief civil ceremony in the Führerbunker beneath Berlin. In his testament, Hitler wrote: “Because I believed I could not take on the responsibility of a family during the years of war, I have now, at the end of my life, decided to marry the woman who, after many years of loyal friendship, has chosen to share my fate voluntarily in a city already almost fully besieged.” The following day, April 30, 1945, the newlyweds took their own lives. Eva was only 33 years old.
