Holy Cross Church

In lively Kreuzberg, Berlin, stands the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, where history, art, and resilience converge. Built between 1885 and 1888 by architect Johannes Otzen, the church is a fine example of neo-Gothic style with its cross-shaped layout and central tower topped by a dome. At its inauguration, Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Augusta Victoria were present and even donated the altar, giving the church a touch of prestige. During World War II, the church suffered heavy damage from bombings.

In the 1950s, it was rebuilt in a simpler style, and in the 1980s it was renovated again, becoming a venue not only for religious services but also for cultural events. Inside, you’ll find a fascinating blend of old and new, such as the colorful stained-glass windows by Johannes Schreiter and the striking triptych “Christus im Holocaust” (1996) by Ismond Rosen. These works ensure the church remains alive, relevant, and thought-provoking.
