Karl Marx

This place marks the beginning of the story of Karl Marx, a thinker whose ideas have profoundly influenced the world. Born in Trier in 1811, Marx grew up during a time of political upheaval and intellectual change, which shaped his vision of society. Though a native of Germany, Marx spent much of his adult life moving across Europe. His years in Paris, Brussels, and especially London—from eighteen forty-nine until his death in eighteen eighty-three were pivotal.

It was in London that he wrote Das Kapital, his major critique of capitalism’s inner workings. Many may not know that Marx was also an active journalist and editor. Early in his career, he worked for the Rheinische Zeitung newspaper in Cologne, where his sharp criticism of social injustices both earned praise and caused political problems. This experience helped him sharpen his ideas and communicate them beyond academic circles. Despite his worldwide intellectual impact, Marx’s personal life was often difficult.

He struggled with poverty for much of his life, supported by friends and family. His wife, Jenny von Westphalen, played a vital role by managing the household and enabling him to focus on his political and literary work. Marx’s core theory focused on the conflict between social classes, predicting that capitalism’s contradictions would eventually lead to its transformation. His ideas inspired many political movements and continue to provoke discussion on economics and society today.
