Topography of Terror

What you're standing on right now is not just a memorial. It is the actual address where some of the worst crimes of the 20th century were planned and signed off on. Between 1933 and 1945, this patch of Berlin housed the headquarters of the Gestapo, the SS, and the Reich Security Main Office. Those weren't just bureaucratic agencies. They were the machinery of terror, organizing persecution, mass murder, and the systematic genocide of European Jews.

After the war, the site sat abandoned for decades, as if no one quite knew what to do with it. In 1987, during Berlin's 750th anniversary celebrations, a temporary exhibition opened here. The response was so overwhelming that it never really closed, and in 2010 the permanent documentation center you see today was finally completed.

Inside, the exhibition uses photographs, personal accounts, and original documents to bring these events painfully close. Outside, 15 stations across the grounds mark the very spots where decisions were made. And that long stretch of wall you can see nearby is a preserved section of the Berlin Wall, a reminder that oppression in this city didn't end in 1945.
