Art Museum The Hague

The Kunstmuseum Den Haag, formerly known as the Gemeentemuseum, is where art, architecture, and culture come together. Since its founding in 1866, the museum has moved and been renovated several times. Today, it houses more than 160,000 objects, ranging from paintings and sculptures to fashion and design.

Upon entering, you’re immediately struck by the unique atmosphere. The building, designed by renowned architect H.P. Berlage, is a masterpiece in itself—clean lines, soft light, and thoughtful details inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its quiet elegance sets the tone for what’s inside.

The museum’s collection is rich and varied. Dutch masters like Mondrian, Van Gogh, and Vermeer are well represented, alongside international icons such as Picasso, Dalí, and Monet. A special highlight is the section dedicated to De Stijl, the early 20th-century art movement with Mondrian as its leading figure.

There’s also a large collection of 20th-century fashion and design. Everything is displayed in a way that invites you to slow down, reflect, and truly connect with the artworks. The calm and quiet atmosphere enhances the experience.

The current building was completed in 1935 and has undergone several renovations and expansions since. Yet the essence remains: the Kunstmuseum is a place to explore, enjoy, and immerse yourself in the world of art.
