Chinatown

Like many major cities, The Hague has its own Chinatown — a vibrant neighborhood full of Eastern charm and tradition. This area was once home to the city’s Jewish quarter. After World War II, the neighborhood declined and lost much of its original character.

 It wasn’t until 2008 that major improvements began, and in 2009, more Chinese communities settled in. That same year, the iconic Chinatown gates were erected. Today, Chinatown is a lively district with Asian grocery stores, restaurants, and specialty shops. Take a closer look and you’ll notice street signs in both Dutch and Chinese. 

Even the sidewalks bear engraved Chinese proverbs. One reads: “Human nature is inherently good.” What do you think — are people naturally good?
