Panaroma Mesdag

When you arrive at Panorama Mesdag, the large round building with its domed roof immediately catches your eye. Step inside, and you're immersed in the magic of one of the world’s oldest and largest panoramic paintings still in its original location.

Created by Dutch artist Hendrik Willem Mesdag in 1881, the panorama is 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference. Standing at the center, you feel as though you're truly inside a 19th-century landscape—gazing out over the sea, dunes, and the old fishing village of Scheveningen.

The museum also includes a small exhibition with Mesdag’s letters, sketches, and drawings, offering insight into his life and the creation of this extraordinary artwork.

When Panorama Mesdag opened in 1881, it was an immediate success. One of its most notable early visitors was Vincent van Gogh, who said: “The only thing wrong with this painting is that nothing is wrong with it.”
